FALL 2024

un/tethered series was created by Gwendolyn Gussman, the founder of HOLDTIGHT interdisciplinary performance company founded in Brooklyn, New York in 2016.

2nd section of the 3 series 'alone' was shown at Newman Center in Denver, Colorado.

Alone is a show about the miracles that arise when trying to hold seemingly contradictory concepts: magic vs logic, science vs story, nature vs human, alone vs together. Using dance, original live music, personal narrative with immersive and participatory elements, the audience explores how we are inextricably linked to each other and to the earth, even when we feel most alone. Beginning as a solo and ending with the collective, this piece challenges the concept of isolation and individuality, suggesting an ever-present, albeit invisible, connection to the larger world.

As a creative collaborator, I wove hemp rope to represent trees—trees of life—symbolically tying roots together to express connection and interdependence. The work stands 26 feet high, bringing a sense of grounded verticality to the space. All natural materials were gathered from nature with the help of my friend, Daniel Davies. The timing of the show, just a month after the November election, made our intention especially meaningful. We reflected deeply on the importance of human connection and the need to hold each other tightly during uncertain times.
